SPECIAL collaborates with other (mostly EU-funded) research and development projects and initiatives. Moreover, we build upon solutions of past projects to improve the state of the art in the field of privacy-preserving big data technologies. The goal is to bring together knowledge, innovation and best practices which match the R&D objectives of SPECIAL. Furthermore, our project and its alliances support each other in their dissemination efforts to raise awareness for the outcomes of our work.

STREWS: Strategic Research Roadmap for European Web Security

Linked European security and trust related research and development with ongoing standards and development work for the Web in IETF and W3C. The project developed a technical state of practice document for Web Security as a basis for case studies on selected Web security topics. STREWS reached out to European industry and projects, and organised a series of workshops to collect broad input for the publication of a roadmap, and created a European Web security community across academia and practice.

BigDataEurope

BigDataEurope will provide support mechanisms for all the major aspects of a data value chain, in terms of the employed data and technology assets, the participating roles and the established or evolving processes. The effectiveness of the provided support mechanisms will be assessed in different domains pertaining to Europe’s major societal challenges with respect to the needs and requirements of the related communities. To this end, BigDataEurope focuses on providing an integrated stack of tools to manipulate, publish and use large-scale data resources; tools that can be installed and used freely in a customised data processing chain with minimal knowledge of the technologies involved and integrating and industrially hardening key open-source Big Data technologies and European research prototypes into a Big Data Integrator Platform, i.e. an ecosystem of specifications and reference implementations that are both attractive to current players from all parts of the data value chain while also lowering the entry barrier for new businesses.

PrimeLife: Privacy and Identity Management in Europe for Life.

PrimeLife addressed substantial new privacy challenges by creating privacy enhanced applications in order to protect privacy in Internet applications such as collaborative scenarios and virtual communities and tried to also address the challenge of how to maintain life-long privacy. PrimeLife resulted in a much deeper understanding of the semantics of data handling constraints management, what roles are important and how to construct a user centric view of a service.

Seramis: Sensor-Enabled Real World Awareness for Information Systems

The objective of the SERAMIS project (EU FP7), where both participating institutes of WU are involved is to push the boundaries of current RFID implementations, thus turning them into powerful tools for intelligent information management. For this purpose, SERAMIS develops models, procedures, and tools for the handling of massive RFID data sets. The project aims at covering the entire causal chain from the initial investment in an RFID data collection infrastructure to the impact of data processing on firm performance and customer satisfaction. Very similar requirements in terms of privacy and security as for the architecture to be built for Linked Data in SPECIAL apply.

GraphSense

This is is a national project funded by FFG in Austria is to research and develop novel algorithmic solutions for detecting anomalies in large-scale, dynamically changing graph datasets. The focus is be on developing anomaly detection techniques for transaction networks constructed from virtual currencies, where we expect the results to be highly applicable and insightful w.r.t. intrusion detection and prevention for graph data such as handled in SPECIAL.

RDF HDT: Header, Dictionary, Triples

The RDF HDT (Header, Dictionary, Triples) project has developed a compact data structure and binary serialization format for RDF as well as tools for processing and efficiently querying HDT in order to keep Big Datasets compressed to save space while maintaining search and browse operations without prior decompression. This makes it an ideal format for storing and sharing RDF datasets on the Web. Prof. Polleres and Dr. Fernández are members of the HDT core team.

Privacy Bridges: EU and US Privacy Experts in Search of Transatlantic Privacy Solutions

In this project, over nine months, an expert group lead by MIT, with Prof. Spiekermann from WU participating, prepared a consensus report outlining a menu of privacy “bridges” that can be built to bring the European Union and the United States closer together. The efforts are aimed at providing a framework of practical options that advance strong, globally-accepted privacy values in a manner that respects the substantive and procedural differences between the two jurisdictions. The results will directly serve as starting points for SPECIAL.
